It’s often been said that trivial things can make a significant difference. That’s as true with air conditioning filters as it is with anything else. Although they are only one component of your HVAC system, your filters serve an especially important purpose. Here’s what could happen if you run your unit without one.
#1. Motor and Compressor Problems
Dirt is the leading cause of compressor and motor malfunctions. Your filter plays a significant role in trapping dirt, pet hair, and other debris from getting into these parts. When your motor and compressor are in bad shape, it also puts additional strain on other working components. Eliminate this safeguard and you could require costly repairs down the road.
#2. Poor Indoor Air Quality
Your air conditioner blows cool air out into your home. At the same time, dust or other particles that are trapped inside your HVAC system will also be pushed out. If you don’t have a filter, your unit will contain more dirt, which will then enter your home, recirculate, and be reabsorbed. As a result, you may notice more difficulty breathing or an increase in allergy symptoms.
#3. Higher Energy Bills
When your motor and compressor aren’t functioning properly, your entire system will need to work harder to cool your home. This means you will face higher energy bills because your air conditioner is running more often and for longer periods. And although your unit is working harder, you still may not feel comfortable.
Changing your air filter often is one of the best things you can do to keep your air conditioner running in great shape. Even so, it will not eliminate the need for routine maintenance and service, nor will it eliminate all repairs. If you need a tune-up or repairs, please contact us.
